Introduction to NORA®

Future-proof your radar with affordable Non-Rotating technology

This whitepaper details how NORA® makes formerly expensive, military-only AESA technology cost-competitive with the mechanically rotating antennas used today, making it available for the civil market.

Non rotating antenna

Your radar modernization objectives achieved

Maximize system uptime
Eliminate the risk of high-cost mechanical failures (bearings, rotary joints) and gain high system redundancy.

Balance budget and tech

Achieve formerly military-only AESA performance at a comparable initial capital cost to older mechanical radar systems.

Future-proof maintenance
Slash lifecycle costs by removing mechanical wear, making budgets predictable and minimizing preventative maintenance needs.

Improve target detection
Deploy multiple simultaneous beams to double dwell time and unlock superior accuracy for tracking small or highly maneuvering targets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NORA® and conventional radar systems?

The fundamental difference is that NORA® uses a Non-Rotating Array (similar to advanced military AESA) to scan electronically, eliminating the need for complex, heavy mechanical components. This directly solves the problem of high lifecycle costs and frequent maintenance associated with mechanical parts like bearings, rotary joints, and motors.

Is the initial cost of NORA® higher than a conventional mechanically rotating radar?

No. A key design objective for Intersoft Electronics is to make NORA® available with similar initial capital costs compared to conventional mechanically rotating antenna systems. While delivering advanced electronic capabilities, NORA® significantly reduces lifecycle costs due to its virtually maintenance-free, non-rotating design.

How does the circular array design improve performance compared to other electronic arrays?

NORA® is based on a circular array rather than the more common multi-faced planar arrays. This unique design choice results in less beam degradation when the beam is electronically scanned off the antenna boresight, allowing NORA® to maintain near-equal performance at all azimuths.

Can NORA® integrate with our existing radar infrastructure?

Yes. NORA® is part of Intersoft Electronics’ modular Airport Surveillance Radar concept (ASR-M). This modular approach allows NORA® to integrate with legacy, new, or third-party PSR transmitters, SSR/IFF interrogators, and antenna subsystems. This flexibility makes it an ideal final phase for service life extension or modernization programs.
