Press Release – €3.65 Million in Flemish Investments for Defense and Security

The Flemish Government, via VLAIO, is providing innovation support to eight companies developing cutting-edge technologies for defense and security. These selected projects range from ultra-strong metal prints for military platforms to high-tech underwater drones and AI applications for online threat detection. This support is a core component of the Flemish Defense Plan and aligns closely with the Flemish Innovation and Industrial Strategy for Security and Defense (VISD).

“We are turning Flemish innovation into concrete impact,” says Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele. “Today, we are supporting eight robust projects, ranging from training games for realistic military scenarios to autonomous underwater drones, and from smart perimeter surveillance to AI combatting online extremism. In doing so, we strengthen both our security and our economy, here in Flanders and within Europe.”

Accelerating Dual-Use Technology

With the VISD, Flanders is leveraging its strengths in artificial intelligence, drones, maritime technology, and cybersecurity. By supporting and actively guiding these enterprises, the government aims to accelerate the transition to applicable defense technology. These innovations are expected to create jobs, drive investment, and open export opportunities for the Flemish industry.

Out of many applicants, eight projects were selected after a thorough evaluation. The applications demonstrate a growing trend of companies looking to adapt their civilian technologies for defense and “dual-use” purposes.

This announcement coincides with BEDEX, the very first defense exhibition in Belgium, which opens its doors today. Minister-President Diependaele noted that the international security situation is changing rapidly, and Flemish companies have the expertise to develop the solutions Europe will need tomorrow.

Beyond these individual grants, Flanders continues to build its defensive capabilities through the Flemish Defense Fund, which invests heavily in strategic security applications to ensure the long-term international position of the region.
