Specialized Lab Equipment

Test your systems with simulators

Radar Environment Simulators (RES®) and Radar Target Generators (RTG) can create a realistic and repeatable environment for secondary and primary radar systems respectively. These specialized simulators allow to assess systems under test in lab and factory settings and can be used on-site for verification of system performance.

Radar Environment Simulator (RES®)

Industry standard MSSR & IFF environment simulator for ANSPs, Manufacturers and DoDs.

The RES® simulates up to 2048 independent MSSR or Mode S targets, ADS-B, FRUIT, reflectors and antenna behavior on RF level. All the signals that would occur in real life situations are injected into the radar, hereby replying correctly to the radar’s interrogation as real transponders would do. A known reference scenario is presented to the radar and compared to the radar output. It allows a full data link to be tested to its extreme performance limits.

RES® Benefits

Regulatory Compliance

EUROCONTROL EMS compliant. STANAG and AIMS Mode 5 capabilities.

Time & Cost Efficiency

RES® speeds up factory and site acceptance testing through generating simulated scenarios which are impossible to achieve with common signal generators.

Repeatability of tests is a valuable time- and cost saving advantage of RES®.

Reliable & Independent

RES® avoids dependency of opportunity traffic and test flights, as such increasing reliability and reducing cost and environmental impact.

User-Friendly with Support

RES® has an intuitive user interface but has many expert features. It comes with profound user training, documentation and maintenance and calibration services.

Capabilities

  • Simulation of full data link up to 2048 targets in Mode S, Mode 1, 2, 3/A, C, NSM, Mode 5, ADS-B and TIS-B.
  • Quickly create complex scenarios and injection of predefined scenarios.
  • Test a radar’s most challenging performance specifications: load capacity, sensitivity, Mode S performance, Mode 1 and 2 performance, resolution behavior, accuracy, probability of reply, performance when using low PRF, high rotation speed, jammer frequencies etc.
  • SSR/ADS-B full system evaluation.
  • Scalable and customizable static platform, moving platform with motion compensation, non-standard antenna systems, remote control and standalone maintenance.

RES® Use cases

System developers

It is the only available tool that allows a user to simulate full Mode S data link for up to 2000 targets. RES® provides the same service in Mode 1, 2, 3/A, C, NSM, Mode 5, ADS-B. It provides full test capabilities for the industry requirements for Second Surveillance Radar.

System acceptance engineers

RES® provides the ultimate test instrument to perform installation and factory acceptance of SSR or Mode S radars. The RES® software enables the user to create scenarios very quickly by using implemented models allowing to test a radar’s most challenging performance specifications. RES® allows BOX-level testing and merging of PSR, SSR and ADS-B performance evaluations.

Maintenance engineers

Mode S radars are complex, requiring a vast number of parameters to be tested. When a radar’s settings or environment are modified, or if a radar’s firmware is upgraded by the manufacturer, maintenance personnel require a method to determine the new performance of the radar and compare it to the ‘previous’ condition.

RES® is perfectly suited for this type of regression testing. Several predefined scenarios can be injected in the radar before and after modifications, allowing performance to be compared. The same principle can be used to compare radar channels for similar behavior and parameter setting.

Radar Target Generation (RTG)

The Radar Target Generator (RTG) is designed to generate primary radar returns. It can be used in two different ways: connected to a system under test (in-factory or on-site) for direct target injection or in the field to generate a remote test target.

The RTG will detect and preserve the radar pulse, apply a fixed and highly precise delay and retransmit the pulse with the appropriate power, pulse-width, frequency and Doppler shift. This is a high fidelity simulation of real targets and allows for precise test scenarios.

RTg Benefits

system intelligence

With RTG, you can test primary radar to its limits and gain unrivalled system intelligence. That allows to improve QoS.

Traffic-independent

RTG counters the flaws of legacy test methods that use opportunity traffic, test flights or comparisons to SSR and ADS-B. Testing with RTG is not bounded to the prevailing air traffic and environmental conditions.

cost efficient testing

RTG testing provides realistic measurement data of the same RF nature as real test flights do, but without their cost, operational impact and limitations. With RTG, there is no need for airborne test targets, making a strong safety case, particularly close to airports.

User-Friendly & easy

Testing becomes budget friendly and easy.

Capabilities

  • Preprogrammed targets and scenarios can be used to evaluate Probability of Detection (Pd), Probability of False Alarms (Pfa), Range & Azimuth Accuracy, Range & Azimuth Resolution, Plot Latency and Plot Load Capacity.
  • Targets fully programmable in radar cross section (e.g. simulate drones or stealth aircraft), speed (even hypersonic), heading, etc.
  • Target scenarios can also simulate windfarm interference, Electronic Warfare (EW) jamming, 4G/5G interference, Ground/Sea clutter, weather or any other real-life encounter.
  • RTG can be synchronized with RES® (SSR Environment Simulator) to produce complex combined PSR/SSR target scenarios for full system evaluation, including Mode-S or Mode-5.
  • Towertrack accessories available for testing of counter battery and missile defense radars by simulating ballistic trajectory targets with extreme precision.
